Second Week of March!

Calgary Humane Society

This week we had a presentation from the Calgary Humane Society. They taught us all about animal safety and what we would need to have a pet. Here are a few photos of the presentation.

This is Max he is a stuffed dog.
We learned how to pet a dog and what to do if a dog jumps up on us.

All the items we would need if we wanted a pet. From dog food, to time that we would need to spend with the dog.

In art this week we worked on a guided drawing activity. I would tell the students what to draw and they would follow along. I have included my picture and a few from the class!
I think they did amazing!

Leprechaun Traps

We started this week by drawing out our traps. We made blueprints and came up with a plan for our trap. Then we used the plans to create our actual traps.
Thank-you to our parent volunteers that came to help.

Hands, Shamrocks and Pretzels

Why do we wash our hands?
We have been talking a lot about how we wash our hands and why it is important to do so. I am hoping that this experiment with our slices of bread will also show the kids why it is important.

The students thought it was funny to walk around like doctors after we washed our hands! They were not suppose to touch anything from the washroom all the way back to the classroom.

Lenten Pretzel!
On Friday we made pretzels in kindergarten. We learned that the pretzel shape was invented by a monk during Lent in the early 600's. He made the pretzel shape out of scraps of bread dough to teach the children how to fold their arms across their chest during prayer. The word Pretzel comes from the Latin word "Pretiola" which means little reward.

Everyone had their own way of rolling the dough to make it long enough to make a pretzel.

We then talked about what our favourtie part of making pretzels was... A few students said rolling and smelling the dough but the highlight was eating our fresh baked pretzels!

This week we also started our R.E.D. (read every day) project! The students can choose a book from my leveled reading books and bring them home to read for one night. Thank-you for your help in making this program work.

I am so happy with how our shamrock art turned out! The students did an amazing job making all the white space vanish. They had the chance to work with different types of paper from regular to construction to warping paper and testing out what laying and different glue would do.
Great work kindergarten.

The Beginning of Lent

We have become Tennis Stars! Working on our hand-eye coordination in Gym Class using rackets!

Scratch Art Project. - We coloured the paper with all different colours. Then painted the whole thing black. Then worked on mini designs to create a scratch piece of art work.

Very important Fine Motor Activity that will help us all through our school years. Getting paper inside the folder.

This week we started our Lenten Journey with Pancake Tuesday and Ash Wednesday. The students brought home a pancake recipe and  Ash Wednesday story and colouring book.

We Made the pancakes in the classroom and then we had to sequence the pictures in the right order!
